When skin feels dry, keep it simple.
Gentle cleansing and a well-chosen moisturiser can be a better starting point than a longer routine.
Start with gentle habits
The American Academy of Dermatology advises gentle cleansing, short warm showers rather than hot ones, and patting skin dry. Apply moisturiser while the skin is still slightly damp.
Read the small print
For dry skin, the AAD suggests fragrance-free products and says creams or ointments can be more effective than lotions. “Unscented” is not the same as “fragrance-free”: a product may contain ingredients that mask scent. Texture and how your skin feels matter as well as the label.
When to ask for help
Persistent dryness deserves a conversation with a healthcare professional. If products repeatedly sting or burn, or simple care is not helping, seek advice rather than keep adding products. Dryness can sometimes be linked to an underlying skin condition.
