Dermalogica: making sense of double cleansing.
Oil-based first, water-based second: what the two steps mean, and why gentle technique still matters.
Two steps, two jobs
Dermalogica describes double cleansing as an oil-based first cleanse followed by a water-based gel or cream cleanser. The first stage is intended to loosen makeup, sunscreen and oily residue; the second completes the cleanse. Its PreCleanse products are examples of the first step.
Keep your touch light
Independent guidance from the American Academy of Dermatology favours a gentle cleanser, lukewarm water and fingertips, and advises against scrubbing. This is useful context when following a brand’s routine: an extra step is not a reason to use more pressure.
Start with what you need to remove
A day with long-wear makeup may call for a different cleansing approach from a makeup-free day. Ask how the proposed routine fits your products and skin comfort before adding steps.
